About

The-Red-Room-DetailOriginally from New York and Connecticut, Cynthia Alexander arrived in California in the 1960s to attend Stanford University. After graduating with a BA, she worked in publishing in New York City then returned to the Bay Area, where she created multi-media training for a software company. In the late 1980s she moved to Los Angeles, where she currently lives and works.

Cynthia began her art career as a photographer, maintaining a darkroom for many years. She studied with such noted photographers as Marion Patterson at Foothill College and David Bayles at the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 1985, she joined a documentary team in Nairobi to photograph the World Conference for the UN Decade for Women; the resulting body of work was presented in venues throughout Northern California. She credits working in black and white photography as the basis for the understanding of light and form that is evident in her paintings.

Intrigued by Eastern and Islamic cultures since childhood, Cynthia has studied these spiritual and artistic traditions and traveled widely throughout the Middle East, Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa. The sophisticated eye and freedom from representation, the saturated palettes and the delicacy of patterns she found in the art and design of these cultures, have been a steady influence in her work to this day.

The correlation between her travel and photography and her love of abstraction, intense color, and the timelessness of Asian art is unmistakable.

Cynthia’s work is currently shown at TAG Gallery at the Bergamot Station Arts Center, Santa Monica, CA. Her work is in private collections throughout California.
